Record Consumer Bankruptcies Hit Warsaw and Mazovia

12,200 people filed consumer bankruptcy Poland in H1 2026, with Warsaw and Mazovia leading creditor losses of PLN 297.3m.

In the first half of 2026, 12,200 people filed consumer bankruptcy Poland, a record under simplified rules. Consequently, creditors lost PLN 297.3 million in unpaid debts during that period.

consumer bankruptcy Poland: scope, city hotspots and creditors’ losses

The Krajowy Rejestr Długów (KRD) published the figures. Moreover, they show an increase of about 800 cases versus the prior half year. However, the rise is not only numerical. Therefore, creditor losses climbed to PLN 297.3 million from PLN 287 million six months earlier. In addition, Warsaw recorded the most filings among cities. For example, the capital saw 687 personal insolvencies. Likewise, Kraków reported 356 cases. Also, Łódź had 327 filings, Poznań 258 and Bydgoszcz 232.

Regional picture and why Mazovia matters

At a regional level the picture differs. For instance, Silesia recorded the highest case count with 1,825 bankruptcies. However, Mazovia closely followed with 1,820 cases. Moreover, the value of unpaid debts highlights real losses. Therefore, Mazovia left creditors with PLN 55.9 million in unpaid claims. By contrast, Silesia left PLN 46.1 million unpaid. Consequently, residents of Mazovia carried larger liabilities on average before bankruptcy. In addition, about 3,600 total obligations went unpaid by 1,190 individuals in Mazovia.

Why numbers rose despite improving macro indicators

The trend looks puzzling at first. After all, wages rose and inflation eased in 2026. However, long-term debt patterns explain the disconnect. Nearly half of those who filed already featured in KRD three years earlier. Therefore, many personal crises built up slowly over years. Moreover, people often repay one loan with another. Consequently, that strategy fails and ends in court. In addition, bankruptcy events reflect past fragility, not immediate macro signals.

Who is affected and practical steps

People aged 36 to 45 represented the largest group of filers. Moreover, they often carry mortgages and family costs. Men left higher unpaid balances than women overall. Also, urban residents filed more often than villagers, in absolute numbers. However, rural debt still causes real hardship. Therefore, anyone facing rolling debts should act early. For example, check your file at a Biuro Informacji Gospodarczej. Also, consult a lawyer or debt adviser before filing. In Warsaw and Mazovia applicants use the XIX Economic Division of the District Court. The court handles cases electronically in the national debt register. In addition, the filing fee costs just PLN 30. However, outcomes affect your assets and future credit access.

💡 GOOD TO KNOW: As an expat you should know local systems and risks. For example, a PESEL is a national ID number used in many procedures. Moreover, ZUS covers social security payments and pensions, while NFZ manages public healthcare access. Therefore, unpaid debts may affect benefit eligibility and credit records. In addition, check your record in local debt registers (Biura Informacji Gospodarczej) and get advice from a Polish lawyer or debt counsellor. Finally, filing for bankruptcy has legal and tax consequences, so plan before you act.
