Parents, wake up: teens risk lives riding on train exteriors

Parents warned about trainsurfing near Wołomin after teens filmed riding train exteriors; learn why expats must act and how to report.

Parents, wake up before it is too late. Trainsurfing has appeared near Wołomin and local teenagers risk death by traveling on train exteriors. Consequently, this is not a harmless prank but an immediate danger.

Why trainsurfing kills

Trainsurfing means riding on a train roof or clinging to external parts. Moreover, victims have no protection. Therefore a sudden brake, a slip or an electrical arc can kill in seconds. In addition, overhead wires carry lethal voltage. However, teens often do not understand that they need not touch the cable to be burned. Consequently, an arc can jump and strike without direct contact.

Local incidents and the Mazovia trend

Parents in Wołomin reported groups of 13–18 year olds preparing to ride on Koleje Mazowieckie trains. Moreover, witnesses described black clothes, balaclavas and head-mounted action cameras. Therefore the behaviour looks planned and filmed, not accidental. In addition, this mirrors recent tragedies in the Mazowieckie region. For example, a 16-year-old died after falling from a train roof in Ursus. Moreover, an 18-year-old fell from a train near Parzniew and survived with severe injuries. Consequently, these cases show the fatal risk.

What parents and bystanders should do now

Act immediately if you suspect your child plans to go near tracks. Moreover, check backpacks, phones and social media for footage or chat messages. However, approach the subject calmly with teenagers. Therefore explain the legal and medical consequences. In Poland police can issue a mandat (fine) and start criminal proceedings for endangering public safety. Also, the Rail Protection Guard, Straż Ochrony Kolei, can detain trespassers. In addition, call emergency services on 112 if you see someone on a moving train or on the tracks. Consequently, a prompt report can prevent death.

💡 GOOD TO KNOW: If you are an expat, understand local institutions. The police handle immediate danger and fines (mandat). The Rail Protection Guard (Straż Ochrony Kolei) polices rail property. Call 112 for emergencies. Moreover, health care uses NFZ for public insurance and hospitals (NFZ = National Health Fund). Employers and benefits work via ZUS (social insurance). Your child’s ID number is PESEL; authorities may ask for it in investigations. Therefore keep contact details current and report risky behaviour early.

Finally, parents should not dismiss this as a phase. Moreover, summer free time increases risk. Therefore supervise where children go and who they meet. In addition, schools and local police often run prevention campaigns. Consequently, use these resources. Above all, act now to avoid another tragedy.
