Over PLN 13.5bn EU Boost for Polish Roads

GDDKiA signed 23 agreements and EU funds for roads in Poland top PLN 13.5bn, supporting S19 and Morawica projects.

The General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA) has signed 23 EU funding agreements. EU funds for roads in Poland now exceed 13.5 billion zł.

EU funds for roads in Poland: what was signed

GDDKiA recently added two agreements to its portfolio. Consequently, the total support from the Fundusze Europejskie na Infrastrukturę, Klimat, Środowisko program passed 13.5 billion zł. Moreover, the newest deals cover two major projects. First, they fund a 64 km-plus stretch of the S19 expressway. In addition, they back the Morawica and Wola Morawicka bypass on national road 73. The S19 project splits into four construction segments. Therefore, planners expect work on Międzyrzec Podlaski, Radzyń Podlaski and Kock. The package also completes a second carriageway section near Wola Skromowska. Furthermore, the project includes seven new interchanges and multiple bridges. Also, designers will add cycling paths, sidewalks and drainage systems. The total project value tops 2.4 billion zł. However, eligible costs total 713 million zł and the EU will cover 606 million zł of those costs.

Regional effects and the Morawica bypass

The Morawica bypass will span roughly 4.4 km of dual carriageway. Moreover, drivers will gain two new roundabouts linking the bypass to local roads. The investment costs nearly 280 million zł. In addition, eligible costs equal 100 million zł and the EU contributes 85 million zł. Consequently, traffic toward Kielce should flow more smoothly. Therefore, the project aims to cut travel times and reduce accidents. Also, municipalities expect quieter town centres and less heavy traffic on local streets. Furthermore, local businesses can benefit from improved access.

Why these road projects matter

Via Carpatia will use parts of the S19 route. Consequently, this corridor strengthens north–south links across Central Europe. Moreover, the route supports freight and passenger movement from the Baltics to the Balkans. Therefore, logistics firms will gain faster routes and lower costs. In addition, the projects create construction jobs and boost local suppliers. However, drivers should expect temporary detours and noise during works. Also, some communities may see short-term pressure on services like local public transport.

GDDKiA says the FEnIKS programme will support 30 road projects in total. Moreover, planners estimate around 18 billion zł in overall support under the programme. Therefore, future agreements should follow as designs and documentation clear appraisal and approval steps. In addition, some early projects used both FEnIKS and older 2014–2020 funds.

💡 GOOD TO KNOW: If you live in Poland, these upgrades will change commuting patterns. Consequently, you may benefit from faster drives to regional hubs and airports. Moreover, expect construction-related disruptions near your road. In addition, keep an eye on local council notices for detour maps. Also, basic Polish administrative terms matter: PESEL is your national ID number (useful for local bureaucracy), ZUS handles pensions and social insurance, NFZ runs public health care, and a “mandat” means a traffic fine. Therefore, register for local updates and contact GDDKiA or your municipal office with questions.
