Night alcohol ban starts across Warsaw

From June 1, Warsaw enforces a Warsaw night alcohol ban in shops and stations from 22:00 to 06:00. Read what expats need to know.

From tonight Warsaw enforces the Warsaw night alcohol ban citywide. City councillors voted 57 to 2, and the rule runs from 22:00 to 06:00. Therefore, no shop or petrol station can sell alcohol for off-site consumption during those hours.

Why the city widened the pilot

The city first ran a seven-month pilot in two districts. Consequently, officials collected clear results. The pilot began on November 1, 2025. Moreover, police and city data showed fewer night interventions. For example, police reported a 37 percent drop in interventions. In addition, alcohol-related offences fell by 43 percent. Therefore, Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski reversed his earlier position. He supported extending the ban to all districts after the evidence.

What the Warsaw night alcohol ban changes for residents

The ban affects grocery stores, liquor shops, and petrol stations. However, it does not affect restaurants, bars, or pubs. They may sell alcohol according to their licences. The law covers drinks sold for consumption away from the shop. Consequently, you can still buy alcohol on flights or in the duty-free zone at Chopin Airport. In addition, the city warned retailers that violating rules can lead to licence revocation. That penalty can end a shop’s business.

Practical consequences and neighbourhood effects

The pilot showed a displacement effect. As a result, neighbouring districts saw more interventions. For instance, Praga-Południe and Wola reported higher nightly incidents. Therefore, officials argued that a citywide ban prevents people from simply shifting purchases across district lines. However, neighbouring towns like Piaseczno or Ząbki sit outside the ban. Thus, some night demand might move beyond Warsaw’s borders.

Public polling from January 2026 showed 58 percent support among Warsaw adults. Support rose to 68 percent in Śródmieście. Moreover, awareness of the programme increased from 60 to 69 percent between October and January. The council considered opinions from all 18 districts before the vote. Consequently, the final vote reflected broad local backing.

💡 GOOD TO KNOW: If you live or travel in Warsaw after 22:00, you cannot buy alcohol in shops or stations. Bars and restaurants can continue selling for on-site consumption. Airport duty-free stays open for departing passengers. Remember that Polish public systems use terms like ZUS and NFZ, and legal practice includes fines called “mandat”; PESEL is your national ID number (ZUS — social insurance, NFZ — public health insurer, mandat — fine, PESEL — national ID number). If you face legal questions, contact a local expat service or your embassy. Also, expect shops just outside Warsaw to see more night shoppers.

For expats, note how enforcement works. Police and municipal officers patrol at night. They may check shops and issue fines or revoke licences. Therefore, stores take the ban seriously. Also, hospitality venues must keep alcohol for on-site consumption only. Finally, monitor local news and community groups for updates on neighbouring municipalities.
