New Lublin firefighters praised after motorway rescue

Two newly enlisted Lublin firefighters stopped at an A4 motorway crash and saved a trapped worker, showing quick, professional action.

The Lublin firefighters who had just joined the service stopped to help at a serious crash on the A4 motorway near Tarnów. They secured the scene, doused leaking fuel, and gave advanced first aid to a trapped road worker before emergency teams arrived.

What happened on the A4 motorway

On Sunday evening three young firefighters from the municipal State Fire Service in Lublin travelled to Kraków for basic training. Suddenly they witnessed a high-speed Mercedes hit a road service vehicle and a police patrol car that guarded an earlier crash. Consequently, they pulled over and acted immediately. They moved fast to secure the area and to reduce fire risk. Moreover, they extinguished leaking fuel, which could have ignited quickly. Then they provided qualified first aid to a badly injured road worker trapped between vehicles.

Lublin firefighters recognised for quick action

Their supervisor, junior captain Bartłomiej Pytka, praised their calm and professional conduct. Therefore, the injured worker received prompt lifesaving care. In addition, arriving ambulance and police units took over the scene. However, the man remained in very serious condition and went to hospital. The Mercedes driver, reportedly a Ukrainian national, remained detained in a police cell at the scene.

Local context and the sequence of events

Police investigators say earlier that evening a Volkswagen lost control and hit crash barriers. Road workers and police secured that initial incident at around 19:30. Then the Mercedes collided with the service vehicle, which moved dozens of metres and struck the earlier wreck. Consequently, the chain collision worsened injuries and risks at the scene. The timely actions of the firefighters reduced further hazard and helped stabilise the victim.

💡 GOOD TO KNOW: In Poland emergency response involves several services working together. The State Fire Service (Państwowa Straż Pożarna) often responds to road accidents first. If you need medical help, the National Health Fund (NFZ) funds emergency hospital care. Also, Polish social insurance (ZUS) manages work-related benefits, while police may issue a mandat (fine) or detain a suspect. Keep your PESEL number (national ID) ready for hospital or police paperwork if you live here. If you are not a citizen, carry passport and insurance details.

Why this matters for expats living in Poland. Firstly, this incident shows how local volunteers and new recruits support professional services. Many firefighters join from volunteer units called OSP. Secondly, it illustrates road risks on major routes like the A4. Therefore, expect active emergency coordination if you travel by car in Poland. Finally, non-Polish drivers should note higher scrutiny after serious crashes. Consequently, carry proper documentation and proof of insurance when driving.

These Lublin recruits returned to their journey after helping at the scene. However, authorities continue the investigation into cause and responsibility. Moreover, the event highlights the value of quick, trained responses on Polish roads.
