Modlin Fortress fire: Evacuations and Local Response

A Modlin Fortress fire broke out on 6 August; firefighters evacuated residents and removed gas cylinders. Mayor and social services responded.

On Thursday evening, 6 August, crews tackled a Modlin Fortress fire in a multi-family block. Consequently, emergency services rushed to Obwodowa Street in Modlin Twierdza.

Modlin Fortress fire: what happened

Firefighters received a call at 21:37. Moreover, six fire units responded from the county station. The blaze started in a third-floor room, according to captain Paweł Plagowski. Residents escaped before firefighters arrived. In addition, crews evacuated six people from the floor above for safety. They removed three propane-butane gas cylinders from the flat. Therefore, crews contained the fire and began extinguishing hotspots.

Emergency response and local officials

Ambulance teams attended the scene to support the operation. However, the report does not list serious injuries. The fire service ventilated the building and monitored smoke levels. Moreover, the mayor, Sebastian Sosiński, visited victims on site. He coordinated help with the Ośrodek Pomocy Społecznej, the city social welfare office. Consequently, officials pledged immediate assistance for the affected families.

Why this matters to residents and expats

The incident highlights risks in older apartment blocks. In addition, gas cylinders inside flats create high danger during fires. Fire safety rules differ across Poland, and landlords must follow regulations. Therefore, tenants should check escape routes and smoke alarms. Moreover, municipal services can help displaced residents with short-term shelter and aid.

💡 GOOD TO KNOW: If you face displacement in Poland, contact your local Ośrodek Pomocy Społecznej (OPS) for emergency aid. In addition, the NFZ funds emergency medical services but you may need to show ID. Therefore, keep your passport or PESEL number ready; PESEL is your national ID number used for many services. Moreover, non-EU expats without PESEL should still seek help and can use travel documents. Finally, register damage claims with your insurer and ask the city hall about temporary housing and social benefits. A “mandat” is a fine in Poland, and ZUS is the social insurance institution that handles longer-term benefits like disability or survivor pensions.

Investigators continue to determine the fire cause. However, officials already confirmed removal of gas cylinders reduced risk. Consequently, the scene remains secured while crews complete overhaul work. The community in Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki expressed support for the families. Moreover, neighbours and volunteers often help with clothing and basic needs in such cases.

For expats, note that emergency contacts include 112 for police, fire, and ambulance. In addition, local municipal offices and the mayor’s office coordinate relief after domestic incidents. Therefore, keep local contact numbers and your documents accessible in an emergency.
