The construction team slid the final segment of the main load-bearing structure on the S19 Babica-Jawornik estacade, marking a major milestone on the 11.6 km expressway section. Consequently, the operation demonstrated advanced engineering and signalled steady progress on a PLN 1.2 billion project.

S19 Babica-Jawornik: key milestone and what happened

The contractor completed the longitudinal launching of the ES-17 span. Engineers moved hundreds of tonnes of steel and thousands of cubic metres of concrete. Moreover, the structure now extends for more than 200 metres. In addition, that equals roughly two full-size football pitches laid end to end. The team used a method called incremental launching. Therefore, they avoided extensive scaffolding across a deep ravine. The technique reduced environmental disturbance. Also, it improved workforce safety.

Scale, materials and technical challenges

The estacade contains about 910 tonnes of reinforcing steel. It also uses nearly 4,350 cubic metres of concrete. Therefore, the contractor first built a special access road for heavy machinery. Moreover, workers had to coordinate transport in difficult terrain. The operator Intercor carries out the whole Babica-Jawornik section. The contract value stands near PLN 1.2 billion.

Therefore, planners aim to reduce wildlife collisions. Moreover, engineers will add a Żarnowa-Strzyżów interchange and a Jawornik rest area. Local roads and drainage will receive reconstruction too. However, drivers must use a temporary connector to national road 19 until the next segment opens.
