Illegal Cannabis Cultivation: Three Arrested in Łęczna

Police in Łęczna uncovered illegal cannabis cultivation, seizing 39 plants and over 1,000 dealer portions. Three men face charges and three months’ detention.

Police in Łęczna discovered an illegal cannabis cultivation in a municipal forest and arrested three men after a brief chase. Officers secured 39 plants, at least 1.2 kilograms of processed drug, and over 1,000 dealer portions hidden in a farm building.

Illegal cannabis cultivation: what police found

Aspirant Magdalena Krasna from Komenda Powiatowa Policji w Łęcznej told reporters that local detectives identified the site during an investigation. When officers arrived they found three men tending the crop. The men attempted to flee but police detained them at the scene.

The suspects are residents of Łęczna county aged 24 and 25. During identity checks and searches officers found marijuana on one 25-year-old and mephedrone on another. Investigators also recovered items used to cultivate the plants.

Police said they seized 39 plants in various growth stages. The harvest could yield not less than 1.2 kilograms of cannabis. In addition, a search of one suspect’s residence uncovered more than 1,000 dealer portions of marijuana. Those portions were hidden on the attic of an outbuilding.

Charges, pre-trial detention and penalties

Authorities charged the men with cultivation of konopi innych niż włókniste, translated in the source as cannabis other than fibrous. Prosecutors also charged one 25-year-old with possession of a psychotropic substance and possession of a significant quantity of narcotics. The other 25-year-old faces an additional charge of marijuana possession.

The court ordered three months of temporary arrest for all three suspects. The spokeswoman cited the Ustawa o przeciwdziałaniu narkomanii. Under that act cultivation that can produce a substantial amount of cannabis can carry a sentence of up to eight years. Possession of significant quantities of narcotics can attract up to ten years in prison.

Local context and policing in Lublin Voivodeship

Łęczna sits in Lublin Voivodeship, a largely rural region where law enforcement sometimes focuses on clandestine outdoor and indoor grow operations. Police frequently rely on tips and local investigations to locate such sites. Detectives then secure the scene to preserve evidence for prosecutors.

For expats this case highlights how Polish police follow through on reports of illegal drug activity. Courts may impose pre-trial detention quickly when authorities argue that suspects could interfere with evidence or pose a risk to public safety.

💡 GOOD TO KNOW: In Poland drug laws treat psychoactive cannabis differently from industrial hemp. The phrase konopi innych niż włókniste means plants other than fibrous hemp, and authorities treat these as potential narcotics. If you live here, understand that possession and cultivation carry serious penalties. Also remember local formalities: a PESEL is a national ID number, a mandat means a fine, and health care runs through NFZ for residents. If you are an expat without long-term residency, contact your embassy or use local legal aid if police approach you.
