Hot weekend in Warsaw: Wianki, new festival & races

Plan for the Wianki Warsaw weekend: free concerts, a new open-air festival, runs and heat warnings across the city.

The 30th Wianki festival returns to the Vistula embankment this weekend, drawing huge crowds to Podzamcze. In addition, a new open-air festival at the Palace of Culture starts Friday, and multiple races and community events fill the calendar. Consequently, expats should plan transport and weather contingencies now.

What to expect at the Wianki Warsaw weekend

The main event is the free 30th edition of Wianki nad Wisłą at the Multimedia Fountain Park on Podzamcze. The family programme starts at 13:00 with craft workshops and a Slavic village. Moreover, organisers will offer flower-wreath lessons and stage shows for children. The evening concert begins at 19:30. Therefore you can expect long headliner blocks and a late finish near midnight.

Importantly, admission is free and the organisers do not issue tickets. However, the park will fill early. Consequently arrive before 17:00 if you want a good spot near the stage. In addition, organisers provide water points run by Warsaw Waterworks, which celebrates 140 years this year.

Centralny Plac Muzyki and the new festival at Palace of Culture

On Friday the new Centralny Plac Muzyki festival starts in front of the Palace of Culture and Science. The event gathers major institutions such as the National Philharmonic and the Fryderyk Chopin University. Moreover, world-class soloists like Lang Lang and Sonya Yoncheva will perform. Therefore this festival provides a quieter alternative to the Wianki crowds.

Sports, neighbourhood festivals and practical tips

Meanwhile, sport fans will find a packed schedule. On Saturday the Jakub Pracharczyk memorial takes place at Stadion Nowa Skra with leading track and field athletes. In addition, several road races, a night relay at AWF and an amp football cup run across the city. Consequently expect temporary road closures and busy public transport routes.

District events run from Bemowo’s health picnic to Mokotów’s Animal Day on Pola Mokotowskie. However, Sunday may bring severe weather. The national weather service, IMGW, warns of first-degree heat on Saturday and second-degree heat and storms on Sunday. Therefore keep your plans flexible and monitor updates.

💡 GOOD TO KNOW: Polish services use many acronyms you may meet at events. ZTM runs public transport in Warsaw (buy tickets via apps). Veturilo is the city bike system. IMGW issues weather warnings. ZUS is social insurance and NFZ handles public health (you will know them if you use benefits). PESEL is the national ID number expats may need for some services. Also, a “mandat” means a fine; police can issue it for offences like leaving a grilling fire unattended in parks. Finally, if storms approach, organisers may shorten or postpone open-air programmes, so check event social media before leaving.

For transport, consider Veturilo bikes and pre-planning your return route. Consequently you avoid long queues and jams around Podzamcze after the concert. In addition, carry water, sun protection and a charged phone.
