The city unveiled the Honorary Lublin Meridian on 26 August 2026 to mark the Union of Lublin anniversary and boost tourism.

The city of Lublin officially unveiled the Honorary Lublin Meridian on 26 August 2026, in the 200th anniversary of the Union of Lublin monument. Moreover, the new installation aims to become a visible tourist symbol and a link to the city’s layered past.

Honorary Lublin Meridian: what and where

The initiative uses the meridian coordinates 22°33’44” E as its starting point. Consequently, the project highlights the digits 2, 3 and 4 as symbolic links to unity. In addition, designers plan the first marker to measure about 32.7 metres, which equals 55 old Polish elbows. Therefore, the number five also enters the scheme as a deliberate historical nod.

Design, location and public reaction

The first marker will sit near the junction of Krakowskie Przedmieście and Stanisława Staszica. It will stand about 130 metres from the Union of Lublin monument, and thus sit on a main walking route. Moreover, planners expect the meridian line to appear flush in the pavement. They consider stone slabs or a backlit element so the line remains visible at night. In addition, the plan includes two small “Geodesist Goats” statues at the ends of the line. These figures join the existing trail of Lubelskie Koziołki. Furthermore, organisers showed 1:2 scale 3D-printed models during the opening ceremony.

Geodesy meets history and city policy

Local surveyors and geodesy enthusiasts drive the effort. Dominik Pytlak and Mariusz Meus lead the group, and colleagues gathered signatures in a public petition. Moreover, the team met city leaders on 26 August to discuss the concept. They spoke with Lublin vice-president Tomasz Fulara and the municipal conservator Hubert Mącik. Consequently, the officials gave positive reactions and pledged support for further planning. The next stage involves technical approvals and promotion strategy. Therefore, detailed design work will follow before construction starts.

Plans and timeline for visitors

Organisers want the project complete by 2028, marked as the Year of Polish Geodesy. In addition, they aim to highlight the meridian again in 2029, when Lublin marks the 460th anniversary of the Union of Lublin and participates in European Capital of Culture events. Consequently, tourists walking Krakowskie Przedmieście could literally stand on a bespoke geographic line. However, the meridian aims to be more than a novelty. The team wants it to embody meeting points between East and West, and to recall Lublin’s multicultural past during the old Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

💡 GOOD TO KNOW: If you visit, expect simple pedestrian works and short closures near Krakowskie Przedmieście. In addition, the city will require permits and conservation approvals for work near heritage sites. Moreover, many Polish administrative terms appear in daily life (ZUS = social insurance, NFZ = public health fund, PESEL = national ID number). Therefore, carry your ID while you explore and follow local signs during installation works.

Similar honorary meridians already exist in Kraków and Zakopane, and Lublin’s meridian would join that list. Furthermore, the project aims to use geodesy as an educational tool in schools and museums. Consequently, the city sees this as a long-term cultural and tourist asset.
