Fake Police Attack in Lublin: 250,000 zł Stolen

Three suspects who posed as police officers beat a retiree in Lublin and stole 250,000 zł. Authorities arrested three men after searches in Łódź, Konin and Lublin.

On January 8 in Lublin three men posed as police officers when they forced their way into an apartment. Consequently they beat the elderly resident and stole 250,000 zł in cash.

Details of the assault and theft

The men wore police-style clothing and gel face masks. However the masks made identification hard. They gained the man’s trust before he opened the door. Immediately after entry they attacked him. Moreover the attack showed planning. The suspects knew the victim kept a large sum in the flat. Therefore they searched quickly and found the cash. Then they left the scene with the money.

Investigation, arrests and charges

The regional criminal unit in Lublin led the probe. In addition the office worked under the district prosecutor’s supervision. Consequently officers used operational measures to identify suspects. They arrested three men aged 32, 36 and 46. Moreover police detained them in Łódź, Konin and Lublin. During searches officers seized drugs, cash, a taser, illegal cigarettes and blank-firing ammunition without permits. Therefore investigators brought robbery charges alleging use of a dangerous weapon. Also the suspect face pre-trial detention. The court ordered three months of temporary arrest. Finally prosecutors warn the defendants face up to twenty years in prison if convicted.

Why the suspects posed as police officers matters

This case highlights a growing tactic: criminals impersonate officials to gain access. Consequently residents may let strangers inside. However real officers follow rules when they visit homes. They carry ID cards, give their name and rank, and present clear paperwork. Moreover officers normally request contact with a family member or ask you to come to the police station for formal checks. Therefore you should verify identity by calling the local station if you doubt anyone at the door.

💡 GOOD TO KNOW: If someone claims to be a police officer, ask to see an ID card and badge. Then call the emergency number 112 or the local police station to confirm. Also do not open the door to strangers if you feel unsure. In Poland official institutions use specific documents: PESEL is the national ID number, ZUS is the social security institution, and NFZ is the public health fund. Moreover a “mandat” means a fine. In addition keep large sums in a bank or a safe deposit box and not at home. If you suffer violence, seek medical help and report the crime quickly. Finally keep any evidence and note witnesses and car details for the police.
