Dramatic rescue operation on the Vistula in Warsaw

A Vistula search operation launched near Gdański Bridge after a teenager vanished beneath the river. Emergency teams continue intensive searches.

A dramatic Vistula search operation unfolded Saturday evening near Gdański Bridge in Warsaw, after a teenager disappeared beneath the river. Emergency crews, including firefighters, police and water specialists, are still combing the area.

Initial report and response

Police say three young people stood on the right bank of the Vistula. Then two of them entered the water. One teenager reached shore on his own. However, the second did not resurface. Consequently, witnesses called emergency services immediately.

Rescue teams arrived at the scene within minutes. Firefighters from the Państwowa Straż Pożarna (State Fire Service) took command. Moreover, specialists from water and diving rescue units joined the search. In addition, paramedics and police officers sealed off parts of the riverbank.

Vistula search operation

Search crews used boats and sonar equipment to scan the river. A helicopter from Lotnicze Pogotowie Ratunkowe hovered above ready for medical evacuation. Therefore, teams could react quickly if they found a casualty. Rescue divers conducted repeated sweeps along the reported stretch below the bridge.

Officers also deployed a river patrol and coordinated with volunteers. Furthermore, spotlights and shore teams tried to improve visibility. The investigation into the exact circumstances is ongoing. Police will interview witnesses and check mobile phone records.

Why this matters for residents and visitors

The Vistula often looks calm near Warsaw’s embankments. However, it hides very strong currents and sudden depth changes. Consequently, swimming outside designated bathing areas can become deadly. In addition, evening hours reduce visibility and make rescue harder.

Officials stress that some riverside areas lack lifeguards. Therefore, people should avoid entering the water there. Moreover, municipal signs and barriers mark safe zones. Tourists and expats sometimes mistake shallow-looking banks for safe swimming spots. Don’t assume local rules match those in your home country.

💡 GOOD TO KNOW: Call 112 for any emergency. Emergency crews will respond regardless of your residency. However, follow-up medical costs may vary. The public health insurer NFZ (Narodowy Fundusz Zdrowia) covers residents with contributions. If you are uninsured, private clinics may bill you. Carry ID and your PESEL if you have one (PESEL is a Polish ID number). Keep in mind that Polish authorities may issue a mandat (fine) for dangerous behaviour. Also, the State Fire Service (Państwowa Straż Pożarna) coordinates large rescues.

For now, rescuers continue to search the Vistula near the Gdański Bridge. Families wait for news at a nearby command point. Emergency services ask people to avoid the riverbanks while teams work.
