A cyclist dies during race in Marki as rescuers found a 30-year-old rider dead; authorities continue searching for a missing 71-year-old.

A cyclist dies during race in Marki as a 30-year-old rider from Catena Wyszków collapsed near the finish. Rescuers found his body about 200 metres from the course, and medics could not save him.

cyclist dies during race

The incident happened on Sunday, 28 June, during the LOTTO Poland Bike Marathon in Marki. Around 17:00 the town mayor reported two riders missing from the finish area. Consequently, police and emergency teams began a search immediately. Moreover, the missing men included a 30-year-old professional from Catena Wyszków. In addition, rescuers also looked for a 71-year-old participant.

Search for the missing 71-year-old rider

The authorities named the missing older cyclist as Kazimierz Niewiarowski from Przasnysz. Therefore, rescue services expanded their search across the route and nearby forests. Teams must cover roughly 28 kilometres of course and about 56 hectares of woodland. Firefighters led the operation, and volunteer OSP units assisted. Moreover, crews used search dogs, drones, quads and foot patrols. However, the search continues at the time of this report.

Investigation and event context

The police now work under the prosecutor’s supervision to clarify the death. Consequently, investigators will secure the body for an autopsy. Moreover, officers will examine whether the rider left the marked course by mistake. In addition, the stage ran through Lasy Mareckie and Drewnickie near Marki. The event formed part of the Kolarska Triada Powiatu Wołomińskiego. Therefore, competitors joined to collect points and earn a Triad medal.

The organisers offered extra heat safety measures. For example, they set up water stations and cooling misting points. However, several riders told our newsroom that the temperature proved extreme. One participant explained that many riders continued because they needed the Triad ranking. Consequently, race marshals and medics remained on the course.

💡 GOOD TO KNOW: If you face an emergency in Poland, call 112 immediately. Your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or private policy helps cover treatment, but public care links to the NFZ system. In sudden-death cases police and the prosecutor (prokuratura) lead the investigation and order an autopsy. Also, the Social Insurance Institution (ZUS) handles survivor and injury benefits in some cases. Therefore, expats should register for a PESEL number to handle local procedures, and contact their embassy for support.
