Check Your Address Plaque or Face a PLN 250 Fine
If you have an address plaque on your fence, check text and visibility. Local rules and a court ruling mean PLN 250 fines apply.
If you hang an address plaque on your fence, you may face a PLN 250 fine. Consequently, the exact wording, placement and visibility matter now.
address plaque: rules and common mistakes
Polish courts and local authorities tightened enforcement. Moreover, the Naczelny Sąd Administracyjny ruled on June 21, 2023. Therefore, a number alone on a plate no longer suffices in towns with named streets.
In practical terms the plate must show the street or square. Consequently, the correct form reads, for example, “ul. Polna 15” or “al. Róż 7B”. However, in villages without named streets you must show the village name instead. In addition, some municipalities add further demands. For example, Gdańsk requires district names. Sopot prescribes white backgrounds with blue numbers. Therefore, check your local BIP (Public Information Bulletin) before buying a sign at a DIY store.
Why visibility and placement matter
Article 47b of the geodesy law requires visible signs. Moreover, municipal guards enforce this rule strictly. Consequently, a plate hidden by shrubs counts as missing. Therefore, a patrol can fine you even if the sign exists but remains invisible from the road.
Test visibility from the road once a year. In addition, stand at the curb and imagine an ambulance or courier searching for your address. If you cannot see the number easily, move the plate or trim vegetation.
Where to mount the plate
If your house stands far from the street, place the plate on the fence by the gate. Moreover, a plate on the building alone can be illegal if the number is unreadable from the road. Consequently, owners now often mount two plates. Therefore, combine a fence plate with one on the facade if needed.
Maintenance, multi-entrance buildings and fines
Wear and tear also matters. Rusty or faded plates count as missing. Moreover, authorities treat an unreadable number the same as no number. Therefore, replace plates when contrast or legibility fades. The typical replacement costs 30-80 PLN. In contrast, the fine can reach 250 PLN and apply repeatedly at each inspection.
Large apartment blocks face separate rules. In addition, each entrance with a distinct official number needs its own sign. Consequently, a single plate at the main gate may not protect all residents. Property managers receive tickets. However, those costs usually flow back to tenants via service charges.
