Blue and Green Dots Coming to Polish Phones

Android 17 will add a visible location indicator on phones. Learn why it matters for Warsaw residents and expats.

Android 17 will show a new blue dot when apps access your location, alongside the green camera and microphone dot. This location indicator will appear on phones across Poland, and it matters especially in Warsaw where many apps request your position.

location indicator arrives on Android 17

Google extends a feature that Android users know since Android 12. The green dot has warned users about camera and microphone access since 2021. Moreover, Apple already offered a visible location cue. Consequently, Android 17 brings parity and stronger privacy signals. In addition, the new feature places the blue dot in the same top bar as the green dot. Therefore, users will notice location access at a glance rather than hunting through menus.

Why Warsaw matters

Warsaw hosts daily commuters, riders, and food couriers who rely on location services. For example, Jakdojade, Uber, Bolt, FreeNow and many delivery apps use your position to work. Moreover, parking and scooter rentals also ask for location permissions. In addition, many foreigners live and work here, so the change affects expats as well. However, people often grant permanent access without checking settings. Consequently, the visible blue dot helps you spot which apps use location now and which use it in background.

How to check and protect your privacy

Pull down your notification shade when you see a blue or green dot. Then tap the privacy indicator to reveal the app name. In addition, open Settings then Privacy or Security and privacy and view the Privacy Dashboard. There you see history of camera, microphone and location use for recent hours or days. Moreover, Android 17 adds a temporary location button. Use it to grant precise location only while using the app. Therefore, avoid giving persistent access to apps that only need one-time help. Regularly audit app permissions and revoke unnecessary rights. Meanwhile, check if your phone offers an update to Android 17 so you can use the new controls.

💡 GOOD TO KNOW: In Poland you will meet institutions like ZUS (social insurance), NFZ (public health fund) and PESEL (national ID number). A “mandat” means a fine you pay on the spot. Many services ask for location to handle rides, parking and deliveries. Therefore, as an expat grant temporary location access when possible. In addition, use the Privacy Dashboard to audit apps. Also, register official services carefully and keep your PESEL or residency documents private.
