Asphalt revolution near Chełm: 4 km road

County signs deal for Chełm road upgrade: 4 km rebuilt for safety and growth, backed by PLN 5m government grant.

County leaders have signed a contract to rebuild the road between Brzeźno and Żalin-Kolonia. This Chełm road upgrade will deliver nearly four kilometres of new pavement and modern safety features, and it will change daily life for drivers.

Chełm road upgrade: scope and contractors

The agreement, signed on 15 May at the Lublin Voivodeship Office, sets the project value at PLN 8.6 million. Moreover, the government provided a PLN 5 million grant from the Government Road Development Fund. Consequently, the grant covers 60 percent of eligible costs. In addition, the county council appointed PBI Infrastruktura S.A. from Kraśnik as the contractor. Therefore, residents can expect experienced teams on site soon.

What the works include

The project spans almost four kilometres of road. Furthermore, engineers will build a new road surface with modern drainage and culverts. Also, workers will widen shoulders and construct driveways to private properties. Moreover, crews will rebuild intersections and upgrade technical infrastructure. In addition, the scheme includes new road-safety devices. Consequently, the county will install clear vertical and horizontal signage. Therefore, the route should become safer and quicker to drive.

Why this matters to residents and businesses

For local commuters the upgrade will reduce vehicle damage. Moreover, families will see shorter and steadier journeys to work and school. Consequently, emergency services will reach incidents faster. In addition, better roads support business logistics and agricultural transport. Furthermore, improved connectivity can help small towns escape the transport shadow of larger cities. Therefore, the county expects economic benefits across the area.

Funding and the Polish context

Local authorities stressed that modern infrastructure depends on external funding. Moreover, the Government Road Development Fund (Rządowy Fundusz Rozwoju Dróg) targets smaller counties. Consequently, such grants speed up projects that local budgets could not cover alone. In addition, the contract signing reflects wider regional plans to measure distances in minutes, not potholes. Furthermore, the move aligns with county strategies to link villages better to services in Chełm and Lublin.

💡 GOOD TO KNOW: If you drive in Poland expect frequent road works in spring and summer. Also, you may receive a mandat (a traffic fine) if you ignore temporary signs. For local administration you sometimes need a PESEL (national ID number) for registrations. Moreover, social and health matters link to ZUS (social security) and NFZ (national health fund). Therefore, register your address early when you move.

County officials say this project fits a long-term plan to modernise rural roads. Furthermore, planners expect fewer accidents and lower vehicle maintenance costs. Consequently, residents should notice differences within months of completion. In addition, the project may attract further investment to the area.
