Wrocław cemetery fees to rise sharply in March
Wrocław is increasing cemetery fees from March — average hikes of around 39% for municipal burial plots. Expats should know how this affects funeral costs, renewals and local administrative steps.
Wrocław will raise its cemetery fees for municipal graves in March, with an average increase of about 39% announced by city authorities. The changes — which affect both new plots and renewals — will raise the cost of a single ground grave from PLN 1,300 to PLN 1,800 and include steep jumps for multi-urn plots.
What is changing — and by how much
The new price list, described by the city as an “update of prices”, increases fees across several categories. A single in-ground grave rises from PLN 1,300 to PLN 1,800 (about +38%). A two-place vertical urn grave moves from PLN 1,800 to PLN 2,000 (+11%), while a four-place urn grave jumps from PLN 2,100 to PLN 3,500 — a particularly large increase. The municipal estimate cites an average increase of 39% for plots and for extensions of existing rights.
Why the city says it is necessary
Officials from Urząd Miejski Wrocławia say the tariffs had not been updated for three years and that running costs for cemeteries — energy, water, waste management, staffing, green maintenance and infrastructure — have risen significantly. Bartłomiej Świerczewski, deputy director of the Department of Strategy and Sustainable Development, framed the change as a response to those costs. Anna Ciesłowska, director of the Zarząd Cmentarzy Komunalnych we Wrocławiu, stressed the new schedule is not intended to generate profit but to ensure the ongoing upkeep of city necropolises. The city also says it must adapt to a recent court ruling affecting fee structures, which plays into the timing and legal form of the adjustment.
Timing and legal steps
The president of Wrocław has signed an ordinance that now awaits publication in the voivode’s official journal (dziennik urzędowy wojewody). According to the city, the new fees will enter into force two weeks after that publication. Until the journal notice appears the current rates remain in effect, so families arranging burials or renewals should check the official notice or contact the cemetery administration for certainty.
