Lublin scam: Elderly man in Lublin loses 120,000 zł to impersonator
A Lublin scam led to an 89-year-old man handing over 120,000 zł in cash after a caller impersonating a doctor said the victim’s son urgently needed treatment. Police located and arrested a 33-year-old suspect from Łódź after a follow-up attempt to defraud another senior.

Facts of the case
According to the Lublin Municipal Police, the suspect — a 33-year-old man from Łódź — called an 89-year-old resident and falsely claimed to be a doctor. He told the victim the man’s son was gravely ill and required immediate funds for treatment, urging the senior to take out a loan.
At about 1 a.m., a man identifying himself as a hospital representative met the victim on ul. Męczenników Majdanka and collected 120,000 zł in cash. The victim lost his life savings.
A few days later the same suspect returned to Lublin and attempted a second scheme. He tried to obtain 20,000 zł and jewellery valued at about 100,000 zł from an 86-year-old woman using the same story about a seriously ill son.
Police response and charges
Police conducted heightened operational activity and tracked the suspect to ul. Hirszfelda. Officers detained the 33-year-old while he was sitting in his car; he resisted and initially refused to open the vehicle. Officers forced entry after breaking a window and placed him under arrest, said nadkom. Kamil Gołębiowski of the Lublin police.
The suspect faces charges of fraud and attempted fraud. On the request of investigators, the Lublin district court ordered three months of pretrial detention. He faces up to eight years in prison if convicted.
Police appeal
Authorities urge residents to be cautious and not to hand over money to people claiming to be doctors, police officers or family members without independent verification. The Lublin police remind seniors and their families to verify unexpected medical or legal requests directly through official numbers.
