Peacock Escaped Łazienki Roams Mokotów Streets
A peacock escaped Łazienki wandered through Mokotów before city guards returned it safely, highlighting urban wildlife and public-safety practices.
A peacock escaped Łazienki and wandered onto a residential street in the Mokotów district yesterday evening, prompting a short police-like escort back to the park.
The bird wore a leg ring, so guards concluded it belonged to the Łazienki Royal Park and they helped it return safely.
What happened on Mokotów streets
City guards from the II Territorial Unit found an unusual white bird walking on Czerska Street near Sielce shortly before 19:00. At first, they thought the animal was a swan. However, they quickly recognized a peafowl. The guards noticed a metal ring on its leg. Consequently, they inferred it escaped from Łazienki Królewskie, the city park famous for free-roaming peacocks.
The officers then led the bird toward the park. In addition, they briefly halted traffic on several Mokotów roads to keep the bird safe. One guard drove a patrol car ahead to clear the route. The other walked beside the animal and guided it. Moreover, when the peacock flew over a fence into police laboratories, guards asked the site security for help to retrieve it. Therefore, they managed to escort the animal through the gate at Stępińska Street and into the park.
Why the peacock escaped Łazienki matters
Łazienki Królewskie hosts a historical collection of ornamental birds. Consequently, residents and visitors often meet peacocks roaming paths. However, peafowl can confuse drivers and children. Therefore, an escaped bird becomes a public-safety matter. The municipal guard took responsibility because Polish municipal police called Straż Miejska handle non-criminal local incidents. In addition, city services sometimes temporarily restrict traffic to protect people and animals.
Who responds and what it means for expats
Unlike national police, the municipal guard focuses on local order, school-area patrols, and animal incidents. Consequently, they often coordinate with private security or park staff. For expats, remember that a ‘mandat’ refers to a fine issued by municipal officers. Also, institutions like ZUS (social insurance) and NFZ (public health insurer) handle welfare and health services. In case of minor incidents, you will rarely need those services, but you may need to call municipal numbers.
