Man Seriously Injured in Gliwice Train Accident

A 63-year-old man was critically injured in a train accident in Gliwice-Łabędy; air ambulance flew him to Katowice and an investigation is ongoing.

A dramatic train accident left a 63-year-old man critically injured on Friday afternoon at a pedestrian crossing in Gliwice-Łabędy. Consequently, emergency crews responded within minutes and the victim flew by air ambulance to Katowice-Ochojec hospital.

Details of the train accident in Gliwice-Łabędy

The incident happened near Wierzbowa Street shortly after noon. Moreover, the collision involved an express train running the Przemyśl–Kołobrzeg route. The train driver reported the event to police at about 12:00. Therefore, officers and a prosecutor went to the scene quickly. In addition, railway representatives also attended the site to secure evidence.

Medical teams performed life-saving measures on site. However, they then transferred the man by Lotnicze Pogotowie Ratunkowe, the national air ambulance service. The service often flies the most serious cases to specialist hospitals. Consequently, doctors took the patient to the trauma centre in Katowice-Ochojec. The report says the man remains in critical condition.

What authorities found and what happens next

Police and the prosecutor opened an inquiry into the crash. Moreover, investigators said the driver was sober. In addition, they do not currently expect third-party involvement. However, officials also said the investigation remains open. Therefore, they will verify witness accounts, camera footage, and technical data from the train.

As a result of the incident, one track stopped running temporarily. Consequently, lines faced delays until about 14:15. The authorities may later publish more findings. In the meantime, investigators may consider whether traffic rules at the crossing worked properly.

💡 GOOD TO KNOW: If you witness an emergency in Poland, call 112. Stay calm and give the location, number of injured, and hazards. Moreover, use local names and street numbers if possible. Note that Lotnicze Pogotowie Ratunkowe is the air ambulance service and often works with NFZ (the public health fund). Also, prosecutors (prokurator) commonly oversee serious accidents in Poland, and police will usually secure the scene. Finally, carry ID and your PESEL only when needed; expats without PESEL can use a passport or residency card for hospital administration.

Practical context for expats and safety implications

Railway crossings in Poland often look simple. However, they still pose real dangers due to long train speeds. Moreover, express trains like that on the Przemyśl–Kołobrzeg route travel fast and stop slowly. Therefore, pedestrians should obey lights and barriers without exception.

For expats, remember that emergency medical care routes through NFZ procedures for residents. However, private insurance speeds some services. In addition, you can expect a prosecutor-led inquiry after serious rail incidents. Consequently, official statements may take time. If you need help navigating the system, contact your embassy or consulate for assistance with hospital paperwork and legal referrals.

Finally, local transport services will publish changes after investigations. Therefore, always check operator sites and local media for updates following such incidents.
