Unia Lubelska Bridge Works Tighten Traffic

Key prefabricated beams were installed during the Unia Lubelska renovation, affecting traffic and timelines.

Prefabricated, prestressed beams arrived at the Bystrzyca site today as part of the Unia Lubelska renovation. The beams weigh nearly 30 tons each, and crews installed them over several days.

Installation details and safety

Workers placed each beam on abutments with heavy cranes. Consequently, crews split the operations into morning shifts. Moreover, they worked between 08:30 and 14:00 to ease peak traffic. However, the city forbade night lifts for safety and visibility reasons. Therefore, the installation required precise planning and clear weather. In addition, crews will pour a concrete over-slab after they finish the girders. Then the contractor will seek clearance to open the first carriageway to cars.

Traffic impact and driver guidance

The work reduced lanes on the existing bridge. Consequently, drivers heading towards the Castle face narrowed traffic. Moreover, the city closed one lane on the old crossing. Therefore, any incident now causes bigger queues. In addition, officials urged motorists to use alternate routes. However, one crossing remains the only automatic bypass over the Bystrzyca for now.

Unia Lubelska renovation: why the bridge matters

The project costs more than 65 million zł. Moreover, the upgrade will increase capacity and safety on a major artery. Therefore, the city expects long-term traffic benefits. However, drivers must tolerate disruptions until full completion. In addition, the contractor PRD Lubartów must finish the second carriageway after they dismantle the old bridge. Consequently, the construction will influence traffic patterns for months.

Delays and technical discoveries

The contractor reported unexpected ground and water challenges. Moreover, teams found wooden piles under the soil, which forced a redesign. In addition, an unusually severe winter slowed concrete and other works. Therefore, PRD Lubartów asked for an 81-day extension. At present, the Zarząd Dróg i Transportu Miejskiego (ZDiTM) reviews the request. However, the contract still lists May 2027 as the final completion date.

City officials said drivers might use the new first span by summer. However, they warned that date remains conditional. Consequently, crews will only start removing the old structure after opening the first span. Moreover, building the twin span will continue the staged disruption.
