Tractor DUI in Zamość County: 59-Year-Old Arrested

A Zamosc County arrest followed a citizen’s intervention after a drunk 59-year-old drove a tractor while banned.

A 59-year-old man has been arrested after driving a tractor while drunk despite a lifetime driving ban. This Zamosc County arrest followed a citizen’s intervention on April 2 on the Malewszczyzna–Hucisko road.

Zamosc County arrest: what happened

Police received a call about a citizen detaining an intoxicated tractor driver. The caller was a 30-year-old Railway Protection Guard. Consequently, he had seen the tractor weave and decided to intervene. He stopped the vehicle and prevented further driving. Moreover, he then alerted emergency services by phone. The driver resisted and behaved aggressively. In addition, witnesses say the man held an axe and threatened to harm the intervener. Police arrived and measured over 2.5 per mille alcohol on the man’s breath. Furthermore, officers checked databases and found an active lifetime judicial ban on driving all motor vehicles.

Local charges, family complaints and immediate measures

Investigators gathered evidence from the scene and from family members. Consequently, the man’s relatives filed a report. They said he had repeatedly drunk and started domestic fights. Moreover, they accused him of insulting and physically pushing household members. In addition, they alleged he threatened to kill relatives and burn down the house. Prosecutors have charged him with physical and psychological abuse, driving under the influence despite a lifetime ban, and making criminal death threats. Therefore, the court agreed with the investigators. The judge remanded him in custody for three months. He now awaits trial in pre-trial detention.

Legal context and why this matters to residents

Poland enforces court-ordered driving bans through police databases and roadside checks. Consequently, anyone who ignores such a ban risks separate criminal charges. Moreover, tractors count as motor vehicles under traffic law. Therefore, rural areas see similar cases when farm machinery becomes involved. In addition, civilian intervention plays a key role in public safety. However, interveners should take caution. Do not confront violent people alone. Instead, call 112, the EU-wide emergency number, and wait for professionals. The Railway Protection Guard (Straż Ochrony Kolei) often patrols transport routes. They may report dangerous drivers they see on rural roads.

💡 GOOD TO KNOW: Expats should note that Polish legal systems use identifiers like PESEL (national ID number), ZUS (social security office) and NFZ (national health fund) in many procedures. Therefore, if you witness a dangerous driver, call 112. Moreover, provide clear details and your location. In addition, avoid physical confrontation. Finally, if domestic abuse exists, report it to police and seek help from local social services.

Consequently, this case highlights road safety and domestic abuse issues in rural Poland. Moreover, it reminds residents and expats that lifetime bans are enforced. However, community response can stop imminent danger. Therefore, authorities encourage cautious citizen reporting.
