ZUS cuts benefits after 12 months — Act now

ZUS cuts benefits after 12 months. Foreign residents must act early to avoid losing income and to prepare documents for pensions or disability support.

This week many people in Poland discovered a harsh reality: ZUS cuts benefits after 12 months without warning. Consequently, recipients who do not act can lose all income the moment their rehabilitation payments expire.

ZUS cuts benefits: what triggers the stop

The law allows rehabilitation benefit for a maximum of 12 months only. Moreover, the institution does not renew payments automatically. Therefore, if you still feel unfit to work, you must file new paperwork. In addition, ZUS (Social Insurance Institution) requires that claimants submit documents in time. If you miss the deadline, payments end. Many families face a sudden income gap because they assumed the state would continue support.

How to avoid a gap and what to prepare next

First, check the exact end date of your payment. Then consult your treating doctor. Consequently, you should gather all treatment records and test results. ZUS asks for clear proof of disability or inability to work. Moreover, you must file a new application up to two months before the last payment. If you delay, you create a financial hole. Many people start a rent claim (disability pension) at this stage. However, ZUS demands strong evidence. You will need medical records, specialist opinions, and diagnostic results. If the medical assessor denies you, you can appeal. In addition, appeal first to the medical commission. Then you may go to court. Many who persist win later on.

Options for older workers and reduced payments

If you are older, you may qualify for pre-retirement benefit. In 2026, that payment equals 1993.76 PLN gross. However, you must meet strict conditions. You must register as unemployed, receive unemployment benefit for 180 days, and remain in the register. Therefore age alone will not win you money. Also note that payment levels drop during rehabilitation. For the first 90 days you receive 90% of the base. After that, your rate falls to 75%. Consequently household budgets often strain well before the end of the year.

Finally, plan early. Do not wait until the last week. Check your ZUS notice and calendar. Moreover, work with your doctor and collect evidence while you still receive benefits. If needed, consult a lawyer who specializes in social security law. Many expats use legal aid to translate medical documents and to prepare appeals.

💡 GOOD TO KNOW: If you live in Poland as a foreigner, register your PESEL if you can. PESEL helps speed up ZUS contact and paperwork. Also open a trusted bank account for transfers. Moreover, keep copies of all medical notes and invoices from NFZ (National Health Fund) or private clinics. Therefore start paperwork early, and ask for translations if needed.
