Fatal car crash hits police station in Dęblin

A car crash at police station in Dęblin killed a 73-year-old driver. Authorities opened a probe and ordered an autopsy.

A car crash at police station in Dęblin killed a 73-year-old woman on Monday afternoon. Police said the driver left a side road and struck the fence of the local police station, near Niepodległości Street.

Details of the car crash at police station

Police and witnesses say the collision happened shortly after 4pm on March 23. A 73-year-old woman from Ryki County drove a Toyota. Consequently, she left ul. Rynek, a minor road, and entered ul. Niepodległości. However, vehicles on the main street stood still. Then the driver moved slowly into the carriageway. In addition, her car left the road and hit the police station fence.

A witness alerted the police duty officer. Moreover, the station commander joined the witness in giving first aid. Paramedics arrived quickly. Nevertheless, the woman remained unconscious. Despite fast resuscitation attempts by several people, rescuers could not restore vital functions. Therefore, emergency services declared her dead at the scene.

Investigation and legal steps

Ryki police said investigators will establish exact circumstances. Consequently, the public prosecutor (prokuratura) ordered an autopsy. The court-ordered autopsy will aim to confirm cause of death and check for medical issues. In addition, prosecutors will look at witness statements and any available CCTV. Police will also inspect the vehicle and the scene. Moreover, investigators will decide whether to open a criminal case.

In Poland, the prosecutor plays an active role in serious road incidents. Therefore, families and insurers often wait for the prosecutor’s findings. In addition, the autopsy result will influence civil and administrative procedures. For example, if health factors caused the crash, authorities may look at medical fitness to drive.

Local context and why it matters

Dęblin is a small town in eastern Poland, in Lublin Voivodeship. Moreover, the town hosts a well-known air force academy. Therefore, a crash into a public building raises local alarm. Residents worry about roadside safety and pedestrian risk. In addition, this accident highlights rules about priority roads. Polish road law often uses visible signs and road markings. Consequently, drivers must yield when leaving a side road and entering a main street.

Foreigners often find Polish traffic rules different from home. However, the basics match many EU systems. For instance, the police issue a mandat (on-the-spot fine) for minor traffic offences. In serious incidents, police may detain a driver and contact the prosecutor. Moreover, every Polish resident holds a PESEL (national ID number). This number helps authorities identify victims and next of kin.

💡 GOOD TO KNOW: If you are an expat involved in or witness to a traffic incident in Poland, call 112 first. Then contact your embassy or consulate. Moreover, keep documentation such as driving licence, vehicle insurance, and registration. Remember that NFZ (National Health Fund) covers emergency care for residents, while ZUS (Social Insurance Institution) handles benefits related to incapacity or death. If police detain someone or if an autopsy occurs, a prosecutor will coordinate legal steps. Therefore, contact local authorities and your insurer quickly to clarify next actions.

Authorities secured the body for the autopsy. Meanwhile, police urge anyone with information to contact the Ryki unit. Consequently, investigations will continue to clarify why the vehicle crossed the carriageway and left the road.
