Arson destroys tow truck and taxi at Lidl, Targówek

Lidl parking arson burned a tow truck and a taxi on Targówek. Authorities investigated motive and urged witnesses to come forward.

Around 23:20 on Wednesday night, two vehicles burned in a Lidl parking lot on Targówek. The Lidl parking arson left a tow truck and a taxi destroyed, and witnesses say the attackers fled.

Lidl parking arson: what happened

Witnesses told reporters that two men walked onto the open parking area carrying a canister. Then they poured a flammable liquid over a flatbed tow truck and a Ford taxi. Immediately afterward, someone set the liquid alight. Consequently, flames spread quickly across both vehicles. Fire spread fast because petrol ignites readily, and nearby car materials burn intensely. Moreover, the attack happened on a public lot at a popular supermarket. Therefore local shoppers and residents felt alarmed.

Police response and investigation

The fire services dispatched one fire engine and police officers to the scene. They extinguished the flames before the blaze spread to nearby cars or the building. Fortunately, no one suffered injuries. However, the arsonists fled the scene in an unknown direction. In addition, officers secured the area and collected traces that might help identify the perpetrators. The police now examine CCTV footage from the store and surrounding streets. Moreover, they will interview witnesses and try to establish a motive. Finally, they will determine whether the attack targeted the specific vehicles or happened at random.

Risk, insurance and legal consequences

Arson carries heavy penalties in Poland, and the police treat such incidents seriously. If authorities charge suspects, courts can impose prison sentences and fines. In addition, owners must start insurance claims quickly. Therefore drivers should get a police report to present to their insurers. Also, commercial vehicles like tow trucks and taxis may have different coverage than private cars. Consequently, taxi drivers sometimes rely on business insurance or company policies. Moreover, if you face damage in Poland, keep all documents and photos for claims.

Why this matters to expats

For foreign residents, the incident shows practical risks in everyday life. Firstly, many expats park at supermarket lots for convenience. Therefore consider CCTV coverage when you choose where to leave your car. Secondly, if you witness a crime, call 112 immediately. Also, file a police report at the nearest station so insurers accept your claim. Thirdly, understand basic Polish terms that authorities use. For example, a “mandat” means a fine, and PESEL is your national ID number. In addition, NFZ covers state medical care, while ZUS handles social security and benefits. Finally, carry proper insurance and contact your embassy if you need help with translation or legal advice.

💡 GOOD TO KNOW: If you are an expat involved in or witnessing a motor-vehicle incident in Poland, call emergency number 112 first. Then report the event to police and get a written report for your insurer. Remember, “mandat” means fine, PESEL refers to a national identification number, NFZ is the public health insurer, and ZUS runs social security. Moreover, keep photos and contact details for any witnesses because insurers often demand thorough documentation.
