Kabaty metro expansion starts — bus routes to change
Kabaty metro expansion begins, with bus stops and traffic patterns altered; expect night work and post-Easter lane closures. Kabaty metro expansion.
The city begins work on the Kabaty metro expansion this weekend, and passengers should prepare for changed bus stops and traffic patterns. Consequently, the night of March 20-21 will bring the first phase of traffic changes near Metro Kabaty.
Kabaty metro expansion: what is starting
The contractor will fence the loop area and set up a construction base. Moreover, the project will remove the bus bay on Alei Komisji Edukacji Narodowej. However, crews will first focus on excavation shoring and site preparation. In addition, they will demolish part of the existing station ceiling, some walls, and parts of the track slab. Therefore, crews will then build a wider bottom slab, new walls, a new track slab, and new track surface including a turnout.
Immediate impacts on buses and drivers
Night changes start Friday to Saturday, March 20-21. Consequently, the city introduces the first temporary traffic layout for buses. Bus lines 710 and 742 will end at Metro Kabaty 02 on Alei KEN, past the Wąwozowa junction. In addition, boarding for routes toward Targowisko (710) and Rynek (742) moves to Metro Kabaty 03 on Wąwozowa Street. However, note that the sidewalk along the bus bay will close later, after Easter.
After Easter, on April 7, the city will close one traffic lane on Alei KEN toward the city centre. Traffic between Wąwozowa and Jerzego Iwanowa-Szajnowicza will run on a single lane. Moreover, the road will operate in alternating traffic with traffic lights controlling the flow. Therefore, drivers should expect delays and occasional queues during peak hours.
Why this upgrade matters for riders
The upgrade targets the track chamber west of Metro Kabaty. Consequently, trains will return behind the passenger platform after the work. In addition, trains from the nearby Stacja Techniczno-Postojowa (STP, a technical depot) will re-enter service more smoothly. Therefore, the operator expects fewer long layovers at the line terminus. However, passengers should expect some short-term inconvenience during construction.
Moreover, the works will support future network changes. In the medium term, the city plans to open a new line M3. Therefore, the rebuilt track chamber will let operators route some trains from the Kabaty depot onto the new line. Consequently, the system will gain flexibility and resilience in daily operations.
For expats, the key actions are simple. First, allow extra time for trips that pass Alei KEN. Second, follow posted detours and temporary stops. Third, use apps to track buses in real time. Finally, expect the long-term benefit: more reliable metro turns and fewer blocked platforms at Kabaty.
